Carlton founded Ngā Ringa Ngaio Whakaora in 2020, having worked for well over a decade in health (primarily as an Intensive Care Paramedic) he has seen first hand the effects of deprivation on vulnerable communities and the impact particularly for Māori.
He developed the Cultural Competency Framework for paramedics while working in ambulance and was Chair of the Māori Advisory Group for the ambulance service. Carlton designed out of hospital referral pathways while working in Nelson to improve outcomes for high need patients and Māori. For this he was recognised and given an award by the Governor General in 2016.
Having volunteered for many years for the Ministry of Health on their Kia Ora Hauora programme, Carlton is passionate about getting Māori into health careers.
